the directory size can be explained if you had, in the past, many
subdirectories of that file. The directory grows with the number of
entry, but does not reduces when entry get deleted. Thus recreating it
make it smaller than the original. (make the test under Linux, a
directory with undred files in it, the remove the file. Look at the
directory size before, at the intermediate step and at the end of the
operation).

For the permissions problem, I need more informations about the options
used with dar, the user under which dar has been used for backup and
restoration, as well as the message dar has output. Last it would be
interesting to have the dar listing of that particular directory

	dar -l <you archive> home/<you directory>
