In the many tries I did (begun a couple of weeks ago) I don't remember
exactly, but it seems to me that I tried to attach the pendrive
directly to one usb port. I can try to do a more decisive test, and
connect the pendrive directly to an usb port, and disconnect all the
other usb devices (although I would have to create a test reference
archive, as my differential backup would not fit anymore into the
pendrive now, but this is another story). By the way, I had also tried
to simply copy a file (using Gnome Nautilus), roughly sized the same
as the diff archive, from the source Hard Disk to the pendrive, and it
takes the same time to copy as dar used to take to complete (so, those
ten minutes mentioned before, not an hour).

That said, the problem seems more general, because the full backup,
which is also affected by the problem, reads data from an internal
SATA HD and writes to another internal SATA HD, both formatted as ext4
filesystems.
