configure fails for dar 2.6+ on Solaris

After updating my Solaris (OmniOS) storage appliance I could not compile
dar from the 2.6.x or development branch - could not get configure to
complete, even after disabling everything I thought I could get away with.
From the current dev branch in git, here was the last line of the output:

./configure: line 24093: syntax error at line 24107: `(' unexpected

The output was the same on the 2.6.x branch; only the line numbers were
different.. I initially tried with gcc 7, but went to gcc 8 with no change
in behavior.

dar 2.5.22 compiled without issues. Here was the configure command that
worked for 2.5.x (though some options were unrecognized):

./configure --enable-mode=64 --disable-gpgme-linking --disable-build-html
--disable-librsync-linking --disable-birthtime --disable-gnugetopt
--disable-nodump-flag --disable-libcurl-linking

If there is another option I need to pass to configure so it will finish, I
can't figure out what it is... any suggestions appreciated.
