you'r not using a virus scanner? People have reported that those
things mess with _all_ files. Other than that (so put it mildly), vfat 
doesn't support a lot feature you expect for modern filesystems. Isn't
it possible to use ext2 (there are ext2 drivers for windows out there)

I don't use a vfat filesystem, so I don't have first hand experience
with it.
