Thanks for the pointer. Indeed, a quick peruse of the man pages for star would indicate what you propose just might be a solution to the "exclude" problem. An issue I see is the fact that some of the options to gnu-tar are hard coded in the hdup program. So unless star is command line compatible with the hard coded options in hdup, then we'll have to make hdup code changes. If star is command line compatible with gnu-tar, then we shouldn't have a problem! I'll play around with it and reply back to the list with my results. Thanks for the idea!
