Hi Mieke,

I remember that I found the Star program (by the author of cdrecord). This 
claimed to be an improved version of tar. The author wanted it to be a 
version of tar that allows to make real full backups of a system while being 
as far as possible compatible with the GNU and POSIX version of tar.

I have no time at the moment to look at the man page to tell you if star could 
help in your project, but here is the link...
