Miek.. thanks for your comments. Honestly... I had simply assumed that there was
a windows port of OpenSSH. It looks like there is not. However, there seems to
be a distribution using some stripped-down version of Cygwin that appears to be
kept fairly current:

GNU tar for windows, looks like there's a port but it's not complete:

http://gnuwin32.sourceforge.net/packages/tar.htm

However - if one needs to run Cygwin in order for SSH to work, wouldn't it make
as much sense to simply run GNU tar under Cygwin also? I'm not very familiar
with Cygwin, but that would seem easier than having a native windows TAR work
against a Cygwin OpenSSH.

I agree it sounds like a tar problem (or challenge).

Actually I have plenty of hard disk space... I zip stuff up to keep the
filesystem cleaner for old stuff that I rarely use but am not quite ready to
archive to plastic & delete. Speeds up searches, etc...
