Dar looks really nice -- I like the idea of being able to split the
archive into DVD-sized chunks, and of having pieces compressed
individually for faster restores.  There's even a GUI, which might be
nice for finding files that need to be restored.

Availability shouldn't be a huge issue: dar looks to be very portable,
and there are Red Hat and Debian packages available.
