my subversion repo at http://www.miek.nl/projects/hdup2/svn/
contains some tweaks for this. I've added the -P flag which enables
the same stuff as in the patch I sent yesterday. Note this code also
has some unfinished autoconf tweaks.

This means you only need to patch tar to make hdup2 work as intended
:-)

I'll try to setup this stuff on my home network, as my backups are not
made ever since I moved, which is:  5 [`uptime | awk '{print $3 }'`]
days ago :-)
