I've heard complaints about this from some other people which had
the same problem. Does upgrading to the newest tar (1.15.1) help?
I've have a *.deb (made on Ubuntu) with tar 1.15.1 if you wish.

If that doesn't do the trick I have some debugging/discovering to
do...
