Folks,
On behalf of iFAX Solutions, it gives me great pleasure to announce the
general availability of a wiki dedicated to all things HylaFAX! For those of
you who may not be familiar with the Wiki concept, have a quick look at the
following URL:
http://www.wiki.org/wiki.cgi?WhatIsWiki
This is iFAX's first step toward tackling a challenge that was never
adequately addressed when I founded www.hylafax.org : the problem of how to
keep documentation fresh.
Credit goes to Phil Watkinson and Robert Colquhoun for heroic efforts in the
early days to import and organize much of Sam Leffler's original content.
More recently, Lee Howard has made enormous contributions both in the form
of an invaluable How-To, but also in other areas of the site including, but
by no means limited to, the HylaFAQ. Despite the countless hours invested by
these individuals though, I think you will agree that the site is growing
increasingly stale, and out of sync with modern releases of HylaFAX.
You'll find the wiki at http://wiki.ifax.com/ for now. It's not linked from
any other site yet, and the hostname may change to wiki.hylafax.org, but
it's available for you to play with, effective immediately. I encourage you
to register and contribute.
So who's site is this, and why should you care? Well, iFAX owns the nuts,
bolts and hard drives, but we feel strongly that the community (you) should
own the digital content. We've done our homework, and we think the best way
to make sure the content any of you contribute is properly protected and
attributed is to license it under the Creative Commons 'some rights
reserved' license. You can find details of that license at:
http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/1.0/
Is iFAX doing this purely out of the goodness of our hearts? Not entirely,
no. It takes a real financial commitment to build and maintain a site like
this and to keep it operational, properly backed up, on a good internet feed
etc. We plan to recover those costs by advertising our consulting business,
probably in the form of a banner advertisement near the top of the site. We
may also sell banner space to other HylaFAX-related enterprises, if anyone
shows any interest. We believe that this arrangement is the best way to
guarantee the Wiki will still be around in 5 years, with its wealth of
community knowledge intact.
So once again allow me to invite you to visit the wiki, register, and
possibly even contribute some of what you have always wanted to see in the
documentation. You now have the power! ;-)
The HylaFAX Wiki. Documentation by the community, for the community.
Have fun!
-Darren
