I don't know how you are connecting the local fax machine to your 
HylaFAX server, but I guess you must have some local phone system doing 
the job.

The number dialed by the fax machine is dialed with DTMF audio tones, 
and this only available to the phone system.  If your HylaFAX 
modem/server is to receive that information then the phone system will 
need to relay it in some fashion to the HylaFAX system.  Often, phone 
system can do this by sending DTMF to the answering fax modem *after* 
the modem goes off-hook.  But you have to program/configure the phone 
system to do that... AND you have to configure the HylaFAX modem to 
expect it.

The HylaFAX modem configuration is a bit tricky because the way you do 
things is different for different modem types.  See:

... and look for "SHIELDED_DTMF" under CallIDPattern.

Again... you must also configure the local phone system to send DID as 
DTMF after the receiving modem answers the call.
