It appears that NCID also establishes a lock on the modem and holds the
data lines open to watch for the incoming CID message.  However, it
appears that it's able to stand out of the way when another program
requests use of the modem (such as hylafax when sending) and then take
it back.  I'm able to send faxes with NCID running, just not by using
faxgetty.

I've not found much on this either.

The fax is being submitted remotely from other machines over the queue
daemon port (most of the clients are Windows).  So somehow I need that
submission to trigger calling faxmodem.

I did look at this but it didn't seem to work properly.  It wouldn't
detect the CID even though NCID can see it just fine.  The advantage of
NCID for me, however, is that it can send the CID to network connected
clients so I'm able to receive CID info in many locations.
