I agree that HylaFAX+ has advantages, and there are users who need
features of HylaFAX+, but many users may not even notice the
differences.

I agree that there should be a separate package. And someone has to do
the work.
I guess if someone does the initial step to provide a Debian package
of HylaFAX+ it will be easier to get the package maintainers to take
over the task. Obviously they don't seem to see a big advantage to
justify the additional effort.

This is not to be understood as a general recommendation against
HylaFAX+. I only suggest to think about the reasons for the choice.
(Was HylaFAX+ chosen because "it is newer and therefore it must be
better" or because the user needs a specific feature not available in
HylaFAX.)

There are always different ways to achieve the desired result, so
choosing a distribution that is better supported by HylaFAX+ may be
the best way for some users.
It also has advantages to use the same distribution for all of my
systems, even if it's a dedicated Fax server.

Yes, and LSB is a good idea to get portable applications.
(I know what I'm speaking about. I have worked for a company that
offers a software for about 15 UNIX and Linux variants. Writing the
code to install init scripts on all these systems was a PITA and the
introduction of LSB made it a bit easier for Linux distributions.)

Yes. Probably you can simply copy the block from the Debian package's
init script.
This is easy for a programmer, but I don't expect an average Linux
user to do this even if he is able to run "configure;make;make install"
(In theory you have to check the dependencies, but I guess it is the
same for HylaFAX and HylaFAX+. To prepare an official package you may
have to discuss if the HylaFAX+ package can use the same facility name
for the Provides line as the HylaFAX package. Otherwise you may have
to register a new name with LANANA.)

I agree, but again you are a software developer, not an average Linux user.
