Notice that this can wait :-) The print version of my dissertation is not dependent on this since it 
uses direct ps or pdf output.

This is a new arabtex version too, so that might have solved the issue. I'll test in a few days.

Oh really. I had almost given up on the index feature already. I'm currently busy with indexing the 
subjects. Would be wonderful if authors would be ultimately indexed too. Don't bother too much 
about index.sty compat now, since I don't use it.
