I do agree with the spirit of Peter's response concerning the confused and confusing state of scholarly styles in the humanities, but it's unfair to say that it's a fact that departments, profs and disciplines each have their own idiosyncratic rules for scholarly presentation. There's really only a handful of styles—MLA, Chicago, MHRA and a very few others—and there remain good reasons for requiring writers to follow these complex styles.

Sadly, so far it is only commercial products which provide automatic ways of formatting references (and of course the fact that we probably can agree on is the lamentable dominance of the Endnote/Word combination). I've mostly made jurabib produce references that follow the MHRA style but only through considerable trial and error and the result isn't yet quite right. The Oxford style in Jurabib has been a great help as have previous posts to this list.

I'm only a lowly literary studies scholar with no programming experience and only a limited grasp of how LaTeX or BiBTeX work but I use both for as much of my writing as possible. I'd very much value any work that built on what jurabib already does, making LaTeX and humanities writing more possible for more writers.

If you have a problem, please provide a complete minimal example document (with a small bibliography database), which runs out of he box without any superfluous packages loaded, otherwise we could not help.
