A crude hack would be to put a hspace {-5pt}~ at the start of the field
where you have stored the first edition, to force LaTeX to do a backspace
here. I have not tried as you have not provided a full example.

For me, in general, the period in your example is useless and rather ugly.
You have already the " and In: to delimitate between the fields. The period
is superfluous. I would also put the year after the author name Sontag,
Susan (1965): "....
to be able to sort chronologically the evolution of Sontag's thought.
