Pages of article and pages of quotation

Some months ago I followed a thread titled "Citing whole articles" (Nicholas
Cole). Jens B. suggested to use pages=test and quoted, from the
documentation:
By default, page(range)s, which are given via the pages-field in the
.bib-file, are suppressed in the citation. With pages=test it will be
tested, if a page(range) is given by the optional argument of the \cite
command. If so, that one will be used. If there’s no optional
page(range) given, the one from the .bib-file will be used.
This is OK. But in my area of research (Classics) it is normal to quote e.g.
J.Smith, "The Artcle", The Journal, 31, 1999, 23-45, p. 8
or similar systems (23-45 [8], for example).
So, assuming I have pages=test in my settings, if I use
\cite[8]{Smith:Article} I get page 8, if I use
\cite{Smith:Article} I get pages 23-45, but not page 8.
Now I simply add manually the page I am referring to after the quotation, but
is there a more elegant way to have BOTH page range and page of real
citation?
Many thanks,
guido (italy)
