figure size on OS X

I seem to recall submitting a patch to use /usr/bin/sips for conversion of PDF->PNG on OS X a few years ago.  I just noticed that my PDF figure sizes are 2X smaller than they should be in a report I wrote a few weeks ago, and I'm trying to figure out what's going on.  Worse, I'm not sure if this is a bug that I didn't notice at the time, or is due to some change in sips.

I just ran `svn up; make; cd test; make all` on OS X 10.6, and fig_test3 gives me the wrong size image in Figure 1 and Figure 3.  If I #undef __APPLE__ in graphics.c and use the gs path, the problem goes away.  So it may be best just to remove the sips code, but I'm still trying to figure out what's wrong.  

Running `sips -s format png -s dpiHeight 300 -s dpiWidth 300 ...` on fig_testd.pdf (3 inch square image) produces a 300 dpi PNG that is 450x450 pixels.  This just doesn't make sense to me; 900x900 pixels seems more reasonable.  Even if the "d" in "dpiHeight" is PS points, that wouldn't be a factor of 2.
