Before I reply to your questions, some words in advance:
1. You should have received mails from the sourceforge mailing list that=20
your post was rejected as you are not member of the mailing list. This=20
policy was set to stop spammers sending via the mailing lists. All posts by=

non-members to the list are held for approval. I approved your post to the=
=20
developers list so that it is sent to the list, and discarded your=20
identical post to the users list.
For future communication, please first subscribe to the list.
2. Please don't send formatted e-mails, use plain ascii instead. The=20
special characters are not displayed correctly by my mail program (as you=20
may see below).

That's the way it is. Blame Microsoft for the incompatibilities from EQ=20
fields to Equation Editor. Conclusion: Don't try to convert the EQ fields=20
to Equation Editor. It will always be a mess.
If someone would supply the internal format of equation editor objects, it=
=20
might be that conversion of TeX formulae to Equation Editor objects could=20
be added as an additional option to latex2rtf, but currently I see no=
 chance.

This is intentional:
in LaTeX, the equation environment is often used for special formatting in=
=20
normal text, e.g. subscripts and superscripts. All these simple "equations"=
=20
should not get the overhead of EQ fields.
Moreover, not all rtf readers can interpret EQ fields, so that they can=20
only display equations which are converted to normal text.

The standard font used for Greek letters does not contain the italic=20
variant. Newer systems are able to display italic Greek letters but if we=20
would change the coding, the result could not be displayed correctly on=20
some target systems.
