This may be caused by problems with cyrillic encodings.  Does a=20
conversion of test/eqns.tex (from the distribution) fail to display=20
symbols as well?  If eqns.rtf works then you have MSOffice2000=20
weirdness and I cannot help.  Otherwise provide a short latex file=20
(less than 10 lines) so the problem can be tracked down.

Funny.  I went to some work to avoid the use of fields when they are=20
not needed.

Probably.  I just looked and Knuth says that it is conventional to use=20=

slanted lowercase greek letters and upright capital greek letters.
