Why is everything in courier by default?

It seems that everything is typeset in courier by default. I
have to add a "\rm" at the beginning of the document to get
latex2rtf to use a roman typeface. That still leaves certain
things (e.g. footnotes) in courier.
Why is courier the default in the RTF file when roman is the
default in LaTeX? Is there a way to change the RTF default
font to roman?
