Using the bowser interface to CVS is frustrating.  I have never really
liked it, but have used it to download a complete text version of files
before.  The trick is to actually download the file and not copy and
paste it from the browser

yep.  I hate it.  You must right click the download button.

It is probably worth your while to install a CVS client and check-out
the sources directly via CVS.
