these packages implement a custom version of itemize (and enumerate
in the case of HA-prosper) since some declaration regarding possible
animations need to be made. Redefining itemize will at least destroy
all animations if nothing worse happens.
If you only want the \begin{itemize}[$\start$] support, use
\item[$\star$] which is supported in both packages.
