Help! Enumeration stops at 20

Hello,

I'm using covington.sty for sample numbering, but at some place the 
display of examples just stops. In my documents it's after number 
19---any example afterwards is only displayed as an empty box/space. 
I'm not sure if it has to do with the number itself, though, because

setcounter{equation}{1}

didn't help. (Covington uses the same counter as equations.) At some 
point, nothing in the examples environment is displayed.

I've changed everything to use linguex.sty, but likewise no further 
examples are displayed after some point. All other text is displayed, 
just the \ex. items of linguex or the text inside the examples 
environment of covington are no longer displayed.

I'm using the latest version of prosper from CTAN, teTeX distribution 
on Mac OS X 10.3.

This drives me nuts, because I really have to finish these course slides
....any ideas what might be wrong?
