| hence administered by others. They only upgraded to texlive 2004 today
| so I thought it would be a new snapshot but, of course, I realise now
| that texlive2004 contains the versions of packages from when it
| originally came out, i.e. a while back.

The support people at my workplace kindly helped resolve the issue in
the end. Here's what was going on for other people on this list who may
have similar issues:

1. while using texlive 2003, the support crew upgraded some latex
packages as needed. In particular, those would include prosper itself,
xcolor and a package known as advi which I believe is a dvi viewer.

2. this setup never worked for me so I had to select appropriate
versions of some of my packages (like color and prosper) and also apply
the color.cfg fix from a bug reported on this list some time ago. There
was no way to get texlive working so I used the local tetex distro

3. over the recent upgrade to texlive2004, I had some font problems so I
decided that enough was enough and I was going to upgrade fully to
texlive 2004, hoping that prosper and its friends would play ball. This
meant using texlive for packages and for the latex binaries

4. as it turned out, texlive 200 and prosper didn't cooperate for the
following reason. After the upgrade from texlive 2003 to 2004, all our
locally installed packages (xcolor in particular) were copied across to
the right places in the 2004 tree. Of course, this simply meant that the
previously up-to-date xcolor.sty for texlive 2003 was now out-of-date
for texlive 2004. Upgrading just the xcolor package fixed it

Hendri, thanks for your help. Mush as expected, you were right, it was
an outdated xcolor that caused the issue.
