I remember having an issue related to this before. Like yourself, I was 
able to increment the equations, but they shifted slightly on each 
slide. The trick is to use two sets of curly braces. Actually, I had 
posted this peculiarity to the mailing list asking why it had to be done 
this way. Apparently, it was the result of some prosper/pstricks/amsmath 
combination. Anyway, the {{....}} seems to fix the problem and it is a 
common solution. As pointed out when I originally posted, an example can 
be seen here:

Example from the PDF:

This will have a centered equation that does not shift with each slide.  Again, if anyone has determined an exact reason as to why this must be done to avoid shifting, I would enjoy the answer.  

Consider the following

\providecommand*{\dumb}[3][]{#1 #2^#3}

versus

\providecommand*{\dumb}[3][]{#1 {#2}^{#3}}

The extra curly braces is necessary to allow for the possibility that #2 has a superscript!  In an unrelated manner :-) perhaps there needs to be a set of curly brakets about the argument in the definition of \fromSlide.  Obviously, I'm just guessing here.
