font problems: can't find 'em, \times mapped to junk

Apologies for these most likely foolish questions...

Just started using prosper.  Been using teTeX happily (with fink) in an 
old (10.2.8) OS X for a long time.  I have two problems.  I will listed 
them together in case they are the same problem.

Problem 1: With the prosper styles, when xdvi calls mktexpk I get "I 
can't find file" for phvro8t, ptmb8t, and phvr8t.

I can 'locate' the following files:
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/adobe/helvetic/phvro8t.tfm
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/adobe/helvetic/phvro8tn.tfm
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/vf/adobe/helvetic/phvro8t.vf
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/vf/adobe/helvetic/phvro8tn.vf
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/adobe/times/ptmb8t.tfm
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/vf/adobe/times/ptmb8t.vf
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/adobe/helvetic/phvr8t.tfm
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/tfm/adobe/helvetic/phvr8tn.tfm
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/vf/adobe/helvetic/phvr8t.vf
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/vf/adobe/helvetic/phvr8tn.vf

I admit that I have never been very good about keeping straight the 
meanings of all of the extensions of TeX font files, so I'm not sure 
whether the above info is useful.

kpsewhich -show-path=vf shows a set of paths include 
/sw/share/texmf/fonts/vf .  With -show-path=tfm , it includes the same 
path but with tfm instead of vf .

Problem 2: I have some equations (displayed with "\[...\]").  The 
decimal points are coming out looking like colons (i.e. ":") and the 
\times symbols are coming out blank.  Or maybe they're putting a dot 
two spaces back, and that's why the decimal point looks like a colon.
