I think the question is, what happens when you run xz.x86_64-darwinlegacy --version ? Because that is what tlmgr is doing. If you already reported that, sorry, I missed it. I'm surprised the error message, whatever it is, was not being reported by tlmgr. We try to have the code report these things. As for MacTeX: what Dick told me to write in the news is that 10.x is not supported by MacTeX this year. Having the MacTeX installer bail out early if it is run on 10.x ... that's up to Dick. Or maybe it already does. I don't think tlmgr or install-tl can check anything like that, because they have no real way of knowing what was installed or what is intended. --thanks, karl.
