Case closed. The softlink 'bin/share-> ../texmf-dist/doc' (OORC for 
texdoc?) caused the hickup. Temporarily moving it out made 'sh 
update-tlmgr-latest.sh' run thru.

Now I have
$ tex --version
TeX 3.141592653 (TeX Live 2026)
kpathsea version 6.4.2
Copyright 2026 D.E. Knuth.
