I feel obliged to report that my own experience is diametrically opposed to Jim’s — I have now disabled synchtex within TeXworks because I was becoming infuriated by TeXworks seemingly being forced to display the first page of a multi-page PDF simply because I was seeking to make a change in the document preamble that could only affect the appearance of something on the last page — the page that I had deliberately selected for previewing (incuding dragging the rulers to better assess the mangitude of my change).
