According to Wikipedia, the operating system on an iMac 2017
can be upgraded to macOS 13, Ventura. Once you do that, you
can install MacTeX, which is MUCH easier to install than the Unix
install system you are trying to use now. MacTeX requires at
least macOS 11, Big Sur, so it would run on Ventura.
