Creating pk fonts, etc.

I would like to use helvetica, etc.

I have some old (and current files with statements like

\font\helveticaeight=phvr8r at 8truept

The 600 dpi and other .pk files seem to be found in an old (1.+) MiKTeX 
\localtexmf which I use as a root.

I am clueless how to get 12pt, bold, etc.

and different point sizes.

Is there a good reference?
