I take it from this that you're using Plain TeX, not LaTeX? If you're using LaTeX, read up on using the proper LaTeX commands for defining fonts (I'm a Plain TeX user, so I just know they exist in LaTeX, but not what they are!)

Sounds like you should clear out your localtexmf tree - the basic Adobe fonts are MiKTeX main packages (Fonts/Outline fonts/helvetic in this case) and your localtexmf tree may be obscuring them.

Change the 8truept to whatever number you want (the "true" simply prevents scaling if you have magnification in effect). The fontname documentation may be found at http://www.tex.ac.uk/tex-archive/info/fontname/fontname.pdf (for some reason in my MikTeX 2.8 setup, I can't see how to install the miktex-fontname-doc package which contains the documentation). The relevant chapter is number 2 (just 20 pages - most of fontname.pdf is a list of fonts).
