a problem with MiKTeX 2.9

I have been using MiKTeX for several years without any problems.

Since my new computer is Windows 7, I decided to upgrade to version

2.9. After adjusting my old batch files I could run latex and yap

to my satisfaction. However, dvipdfm and dvipdfmx refused to produce

the pdf file. Also, dvips refused to produce the ps file (if it did it,

I could use the Acrobat distiller).

I thought there was something wrong with the downloading/installation

so the whole process was carefully repeated from another mirror. Again,

latex and yap are functioning and dvipdfm, dvipdfmx and dvips are not.

Did something similar happen to any of the readers and if it did and a

remedy was found, I should be grateful for some advice.

P.S. TeXworks makes very fast a very nice pdf but it does not

accept figures, or I do not know how to make it accept them.
