MiKTeX 2.9 and Windows 7: strange font problem

Dear list readers, dear Ulrike,
Yesterday I broke into another thread with my getting-fresh-MiKTeX-install-on-fresh-Win7box-to-work-as-I'm-used-to , with what I thought was a minimal example displaying my problem.
Ulrike Fischer gave a nice response, with advice towards the end:

What my provision of a minimal example in the other thread (of what I perceived to be my problem) derailed, was what is my problem:
I have been able to compile a few documents during test runs.
I have logged off my machine.
I have logged on to my machine.
I have FAILED to get results on the same documents!
Symptom: On one of last year's exam texts (my preferred test rabbit), only the table lines, some parenthesis and +'es and -'es were visible, no fonts for normal or greek letters in the pdf file.
In the dvi file of this FAILED run, there is font info, but no æ,ø,å letters or ligatures (ff, as in efficient). The pdf correctly has two pages, but no real content.
In contrast, the pdf from the successful pdflatex run (of Step 1 above, before steps 2&3) seems correct, with full content.
Clues as to what may be wrong? Should I try uninstalling adobe acrobat (reader, distiller and pro) as I've seen others resorted to in a thread from this winter?
I really am clueless, and when this week ends my friendly local Windows support will start his holiday, and I think I won't get help so easily if its a user environment problem.
[I have saved both successfull and failed result files in separate folders as documentation.]
