Yes, I installed the cm-super fonts. I did not test the lmodern  
fonts, as I believe MiKTeX calls these lm only - can that be the  
case? Anyway, I try to tackle one problem at a time!

I understand and fully accept that I have to provide more juice (or  
more wool, and less shrieking as the saying goes hereabouts).

Since this is a work environment problem and I am right now home  
again, I only have some mail-to-self notes to provide until tomorrow:

If some of this is considered deprecated, or otherwise grossly  
outdated ways to go about doing things (has Stix font progressed  
enough, etc.), I'd appreciate hints or opinions in that direction.  
I've simply used things that at some point have seemed a good idea,  
but years fly by!

Now, the complaints from YAP trying to render the .dvi file from a  
FAILED run are the following, where I have at the end noted what  
fonts it says are not installed (gleaned from clicking File: Document  
Properties inside YAP):

I accept, and will do this when I get back to work tomorrow. But I  
can tell you already: the pdflatex aborts with fatal error, and  
produces no file. The pdf with table lines (from | and \hline ) and  
some (, ), +, and - symbols stem from feeding a .ps (from a FAILED  
run) into Acrobat Pro.

My main worry (shared by local admin) is that I could have successful  
runs, then after logging off/on again have consistent fails (and  
MiKTeX seems unaware of fonts needed).

But again, we cannot really progress until I have done my homework,  
uh, at work and not home :) Thanks so far!
