I apologize for confusion, but remember my first post (in the other thread) I thought it had to do with æøå problems only. It now seems to be connected to the use of mathptmx specifically, perhaps in its conjunction with T1 encoding (I haven't tried yet, I wanted to upload quickly).

Again, I apologize if this is a surprise, but I have been on this work network happily texing for 7 years - only thing is this simultaneous XP->Win7 and 2.7 (or 2.8)-->Miktex 2.9 switch.

The uploaded folder contains subfolders latexminimal (with results of a latex run) and pdflatexminimal (with results of pdflatex run) on file minimal.tex in folder of C:\temp\test .

I myself never changed anything else than asking the basic MiKTeX installer to install into C:\miktex29 , which is Root2 above (and chosing 'yes' to installing packages on the fly). Is the location of Root 4 (same path as CommonInstall) then a bug or a feature of my environment? Does anyone know? Note: the C:\Program Files (x86)\MiKTeX 2.9 path is the default one of the installer - I'd thought that c:\miktex29 would override it?
