Dear Ulrike, Thanks for your quick reply! Executing mpm in command line leaded to the same error message (now appearing in the Dos window). But, I found a way to solve the problem: download miktex-update_admin.exe from my laptop (a recent version from May before I updated it on my workstation) and execute it. It worked fine. The updated MikTex updater as of today does not have my reported problem... But pdflatex now fails: !pdfTeX error: pdflatex (file C:/Users/Cl├®ment/Documents/Tex/articles/vortex/fig_dens.pdf): xpdf: reading PDF image failed ==> Fatal error occurred, no output PDF file produced!) Yes the path has an accent (and the "fig_dens.pdf" figure is in fact in the same directory as the TeX source)! Note that "Clément" appears instead as "Cl├®ment"... It worked well before but not now... If I copy the entire directory "vortex" where my TeX source file and figures are to C:\, and pdflatex works fine again. So recent updates of MikTex seems to have trouble to work with accentuated path. Note that, strangely enough, pdftex and latex are not plagued by the same problem, and fc-cache -v does not report any problem. Hope that this problem will be resolved in a future update. Best regards Clément (with a damn accent!)
