paper format for pdflatex

Hi,

I am sending again a message that has not shown on the list 30 minutes later (I did not get the message, either). Sorry if this results in a duplicate.

I was trying to change default paper format in miktex 2.8 and got the error message below. Is there a way to fix the issue that does not involve upgrading to a new version of miktex (if the age is the problem)? I also could not find the file pdflatex.log, in case it would be helpful - could it be automatically deleted?
