changing default paper format in miktex 2.8

Hi,

I was trying to do as the subject line states - i.e., change default paper format in miktex 2.8 - and got the error message below. Is there a way to fix the issue that does not involve upgrading to a new version of miktex (if the age is the problem)? I also could not find the file pdflatex.log, in case it would be helpful - could it be automatically deleted?
