problems using CKJ

I'm trying to type some Japanese into a document.
I have the CJK package installed, along with cjk-fonts. I also refreshed
FNDB. I was directed here after posting on
tex.stackexchange.com.<http://tex.stackexchange.com/questions/28973/miktex-cant-find-udmj-cfg/28978#28978>
I've been trying to compile the following minimal document:

The file is saved in UTF8. When I run latex, this is the output:

Is this a MikTex bug or have I done something wrong?
