No, I don't have any way to produce the 'attention lapse' on 
demand.  However, there is the File --> 'Revert to saved' menu 
choice.  The trouble is that this is usually grayed out, unless the 
.tex file has been changed in the TeXworks window itself.  So, a 
(rather risky) work-around is to type something there, whereupon the 
'Revert to saved' line becomes active, and when clicked brings up a 
dialog asking 'revert or cancel?'.  I choose 'revert' and get the 
file as it was updated last in the gvim window.  When I get tired of 
doing this, I shut down TeXworks and start the process over again.  ;-)
