Strange Behavior of TeXWorks typesetting

I have just downloaded the 64-bit version of MiKTeX. Using the
accompanying TeXWorks I enountered the following behavior:
Typesetting a tex file with pdflatex via TeXWorks
produces a dvi file.
Typesetting the same file tex file with XeLaTeX via
TeXWorks produces a pdf file.
This is counterintuitive and, of course, just opposite of how my earlier
installations of MiKTeX behave. What is the fix?
Thanks,
George McNulty
