pdflatex and papersize

Good Morning!
I have problems with pdflatex and PDF papersize.
Let say we have an LaTeX document.
MiKTeX 2.9 is configured to use a4 paper.
We compile it with Latex via Winshell.
After that we use dvi2ps and ghostview.
Papersize of resulting PDF is a4 (correct)
when I compile it with PDFTEX (pdflatex) resulting pdf file is in letter.
So i check where sits defaults for pdflatex (pdftex):
they are at:
<MIKTEX>\pdftex\config\pdftex.cfg

as you see they are a4
How can I produce with pdflatex a4 PDF?
I try:
\usepackage[a4paper]{geometry}
in Latex sources but it brokes formatting.
any clues?
