miktex 2.1 on win 7 problem: metafont mode s not seen by initexmf, Yap

Hi, MikTeX Community I am using MikTeX 2.1 + WinEdt 5.x on WinXP for many years without problems. But after I installed it on another machine running Win 7, MikTeX appears to work partially: it compiles all LaTeX documents, produces ps and pdf outputs, generates necessary pk fonts but does not preview documents by Yap. Yap reports an error: "METAFONT: unknown ljfour mode". In fact, the lists of screen and printed modes in Yap are seen to be empty though all necessary files seem to be present: \texmf\metafont\misc\modes.mf \texmf\miktex\config\mfmodes etc. It also appears that the line command initexmf --list-modes does not see metafont modes as well. What could be the reason of this problem within Windows 7 ? What feature is different in Windows 7 from that of XP ? That is why I hate the idea of updating and upgrading any software tool being currently used. I suspect that there is a confidential agreement between hardware and software manufacturers in order to force the users to visit their shops again and again. Some time ago I tried MikTeX 2.6 and 2.7 and found that its font generation subsystem became extremely huge and slow as compared to 2.1, so I did not like it.
