You're right--it doesn't. I was just trying to think of a simpler 
solution for someone who is blind, but I came in late to the discussion 
and missed the part about needing to convert from Word to LaTeX. 
Writer2LaTeX, an add-in for OpenOffice.org Writer, does a very good job 
and is highly configurable--and free:

http://www.openoffice.org/

To use it, you have to open the Word document in Writer and then export 
as LaTeX.

If people need to convert directly from Word to LyX, they can try my 
LyXConverter, which is a Word add-in. I'm biased, but I think it works 
very well. I use it a lot:
