Bibtex option --min-crossrefs does not work

I would need to disallow cross references to appear as full entries as in the following example S. Agarwal, R. Agrawal, P. Deshpande, A. Gupta, J.F. Naughton, R. Ra- makrishnan, and S. Sarawagi. On the computation of multidimensional aggregates. In Vijayaraman et al. [233], pages 506-521. and instead entries should inherit their fields from their parent entry S. Agarwal, R. Agrawal, P. Sarda (Morgan Kaufmann, San Francisco, 1996), pages 506-521. According to this document http://ctan.sharelatex.com/tex-archive/biblio/bibtex/contrib/doc/btxFAQ.pdf this can be obtained by setting the --min-crossrefs option to a high value as in bibtex --min-crossrefs=9000 myfile However this does not change anything and the cross references still appear on their own :-( Any way to avoid this behaviour ?
