According to the folks over on tex.stackexchange.com, the problem is that that the "fi" is being converted into a ligature in whatever encoding I am using. I am not specifying any special encoding, but am letting latex pick up whatever is the default. It was associated with UTF-8 encoding of the file. But I can't recall the exact issue and fix. Unfortunately I cannot recreate the problem today.
