I completely agree! Providing context is the key, but top-posting with
full quote does exactly not provide context and it's highly inefficent.
Email communication is different, because here are just a "few"
messages, where you can have context in mind. Reading dozens of
newsgroups (100+ posts) full of top-posting with full quotes is horribly
inefficient, exactly because near context is lost.

But then I really don't understand why you are using Google groups
instead of a decent newsreader. Even Thunderbird provides everything out
of the box without the bypass of a crippled web interface you then
bypass with email notification. With just a few keyboard shortcuts, it's
highly efficent:
b back (previous message)
n next
m mark as (un)read
k (kill) ignore thread (mark all messages in the thread as read)
space scroll down

Not to the best of my knowledge.

Not the key feature for me! ;-) There's not necessarily a relation
between upvotes and quality of the answer. One point that is sometimes
criticised, is that you don't get many upvotes without image. An image
increases the quality of an answer, but a one line comment can provide
the better solution.
